My metalurgical expertise is not that great, and aluminium is not that exciting. The temperatures are probably too low for any interesting effects in any case.
My C.Eng application majored on the effects of thermal fatigue and high temperature creep in Chromium, Molybenum, Vanadium (CMV) pipework. Neither of these phenominons should occur in your fireguard- unless you lob water on it when it is hot.
Watch out for aligators and discarded Burmese pythons in Florida- there are supposed to be loads of both there.
