Big New Problem!

It rivals the Chocolate Peanut Butter and that's saying something!
I guess this has become a food blog!

Cottage Pie like Mom used to make

But with more butter in the mashed potato.
For those who don't recognise it its a meat base with thyme, onions,
Marmite and stock. Topped with mashed potatoes baked and the top
broiled (grilled as they say in UK)

How much wood?

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck
If a woodchuck could chuck wood?

FYI a woodchuck is a bird.
I had a "cord" of firewood delivered
today. I think it is some derivation of a cubic yard. Whatever it is,
after four hours carrying it through the house I still had about half
of it left.

Pad Kee Mao

Usually translated to "Drunken Noodles" for various confusing reasons
ie the chef was drunk and threw everyhing in or it's what people eat
when they are drunk - like curry in England.
Pork tenderloin with chillis, garlic, Thai basil, onions, fresh rice
noodle and Chinese broccoli. Cooked, of course, in a wok. A very spicy
dish and a real favorite of mine.

Celadon Plates

Bought in Chiang Mai in Nothern Thailand. The green color of the glaze
Arises from the type of wood used in firing. Elephants like the ones
on the plate are sacred in Thailand.

Bronze Buddha cutlery

From, as it says on each piece "Siam"
Thailand was called Siam until 1939 when it was changed to Thailand.
It became Saim again from 1945 to 1949
Wiki is not clear on why. Perhaps one of my, hitherto, mute readers
can enlighten us!

Foriegn Lands and People

The name of the piece I liked out of the three I saw.
This picture on the progamme is one of my favourite. She is draped
like a cloth sculpture high on this wooden monolith. She was delivered
gracefully to and from this precarious location by male, muscular,
kinetic poetry accompanied by live piano music. The warm familiarity
of the music inspired confidence in the dancing

Culture Vulture Report

My kind of Ballet! a few people on stage, nobody wearing silly frilly things, nobody showing how they jump and spin in the air, live classical music.
The last thing I ever want at the ballet is hundreds of swans flitting around spinning in the air so you don't know where to look.
In this case, Colorado Ballet, dancing to piano music of Schuman - Scenes from Childhood, Dreaming and other well known pieces.

The dancers moved these large pillars around the stage which, at times, looked like a construction site. Two men carrying one high above themselves while women danced underneath seeming oblivious to the overhead danger.
The first piece they danced had been to Bruch's Violin Concerto and was something of a disaster with failed lifts and generally leaden dancing.
The final piece, was danced to Chopin piano music and was a deliberate slapstick comedy. clever and creative but not enjoyable to me.

Casablanca! The good news!

The bad news? - Denver Colorado.
Yes a Moroccan dinner before the culture vulture hits the Ballet.

Only 72

Lengths of this baby for the morning mile and it's even stopped raining.
Reminds me of j's LP record of David Frost talking about which Hilton
begat which Hilton - long before Paris was born. "and there was a
great flood of iced water" the significance of which was unclear to me
until I came to live here. I saw the play "Frost Nixon" on Broadway
and thought it was excellent. Interesting how people like David Frost
and The Beatles whom our parents assured us were, at best unimportant
and at worst evil, turned out so successful. What similarly mistaken
information have we passed on?

Speaking of weather

Which I was in the last blog, which comes next if you know what I mean.
Here's a bit of Hannah - who saoked me today.

Sorry Symposium

Not conference! I think symposia go round and round like slow, boring,
weather events.
Here is another bag for the collection.

Incendio Arriba!

Was the call right after the fire alarm went off in our Hotel Casa Madrona
Bags just packed and about to leave - then the deafening noise and elevators closing off.
We walked downstairs into the street where the fire, fire trucks and police were very real.
It seems the fire began, as many do, in the kitchen exhaust ducts on the ground floor then spread upwards.
We watched the excitement and then followed little william's suggestion of hamburgers.
After all this we were finally allowed back to our smokey room to pick up our bags and leave.
The closest I have ever been to being in a fire and close enough!

Finland?

What did Nero do?

While Rome burned?
Ate hamburgers!

Calling Fireman Sam

In Ringsted Denmark!
All hands to the pumps
