Mainly for Cyclists

seen on a nearby street in Steamboat Springs
I arrived early for the tour.

All that tubing next to the wall is Titanium - or "Tie" as they call it.

machines all familiar and many were old - Bridgeport milling machine here.

Finished frames

The frame is purged inside with argon through this pipe - to prevent oxidation during welding.

Tack welds to start off with

One of the welders had built his own bike with some carbon as well as Ti tubing - this was very very light.

Argon flows over the electrode and the outside of the work and fresh welds shine like silver - no oxygen = no oxidation! Welds are done a bit at a time to keep the frame as cool as possible.

A solid lump of Ti with some CNC machining completed

a few finished products

All in all a very enjoyable tour - great people all enthusiastic and keen cyclists.

Apparently Mr Moots was a crocodile on a pencil eraser which the owner had as a child.

He has a Scandinavian sounding name which I can't remember.

Comments:
I'd LOVE to go and see that, maybe MK anf J will let us take that trip...

only trouble is it's about a four hour drive - six if you go through rocky mtn. park. Roads are not fast it's pnly 100 miles or so

Nice photos. Years ago I traveled in the area you drove thru in CO, Continental Divide is a fascinating little detail. I traveled thru CO down to NM, beautiful forests like out of a dream. Enjoyed the bicycle plant.

Fantastic scenery, we will definately consider going there, maybe not the Moots factory since we will almost certainly come out with yet another bike to bring home! The answer is no, no and no, we do not need more bikes.
I have now got the Rough Guide to CO which I will bore William to death with, he already regrets buying it for me.

Ah, back purging of a weld- the more civilised alternative to using solarflux- and more likely to yield an acceptable weld. We do the same with stainless steel welds. The welders hate using flux as if they stop and then start the weld again, then they usually have to grind it out and start from scratch as the flux is exhausted. There can be problems with Tig welds if the electrode touches the wled metal.

I take it that you like bikes!

The invisible man rides again.

Perhaps C.Eng can help me grow a bicycle plant.
