From Malaya

As we die-hard colonialists call it! This, they claim, is the tallest building in the world but then someone mentions Taipei and they say the tallest TWIN TOWERS in the world. Anyway they look gorgeous all clad in shiny stainless steel like giant Chrysler Buildings. Built in 1997 the architects are from California.
Amazingly this railway station was built in 1910 in the Moorish style but the architect was British.
KL ( as we call it) is a lovely clean town with people of all races, shapes, sizes and colors blending, seemingly, in perfect harmony. Men in tee shirts and jeans with wives covered from head to toe except for their eyes - looking out of a slit like a coastal fortification tower! Sitting with friends who have short skirts and low-cut blouses. Why can't the whole world blend into this kind of agreeable mix?
Food is a blend of Indian, Chinese, Thai, Indonesian and anything you thought you knew about where naan bread and pulau rice and beef rendang came from is probably wrong.
Most of all I love the hot, humid all year round weather.

Climate Change

I need to tell as many people as I can that I was talking nonsense when I said temperatures in Malaysia were highs in the 70s lows in the 30s - I was looking at a Fahrenhiet/Celsius chart and was mixing my units. As to the people I told at the party last night that it can get down close to freezing even right by the equator - well I just hope, as is quite likely, that they weren't listening!
I am glad to report that highs are in the 90s and lows around 70 - which is around the 30s celsius. Those who know me will realize that this is the perfect temperature for existence.
So I just unpacked my sweater and put shorts and tee shirts in!
Kuala Lumpur here we come!

Merry Christmas

Last night was the OSI Pharmaceuticals Christmas Party! - in the dark, distant background a very good a capella group provided entertainment.
Now we are off to Kuala Lumpur and Penang Malaysia for two weeks. I promise to keep in touch if I can.
I love you all!

Boulder from the Other Side of Town

The so-called "flatirons" are the flat rock faces to the right. We live near the bottom of them.
More snow is predicted for the weekend but hopefully we will be able to escape to the warmer climate of Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.
I have to admit that the sun shines most days here and it never seems to rain.
Thank you so much for all your comments. I feel quite powerful sitting hear spouting this drivel, knowing that people in California, New Jersey, New York, Denmark, England, at least will read it.
By the way the driveway IS heated but what that means is that snow falling on CERTAIN PARTS of the driveway melt and flow down to the area next to the street and form a skating rink of three inch thick solid ice.

Having "fun" in the snow!

This is the pile of snow and ice I have shovelled over the last month at the bottom of the driveway. Note the tree inch thick pieces of ice in it!
Can't wait to fly to Malaysia on Sunday!
Thanks for all the comments I will try to keep you posted on the travel - assuming we can actually get out of Denver! Posting pics from the phone is, apparently, only possible in the US.

The Bird of Paradise Taps on the Window

Little comprehending, it seems, the arctic tundra just an inch away from it!

Somewhere in its genes sunlight links with ornange and purple flower production.

Caution seems to overrule anybody in that factory coming to work for many months.

In the other direction, confusion of a different kind!
Where warm children once played
Now a weiry old man daily plops his weary way up and down before dawn.

Earth Hath Not Anything to Show

Just Snow!
You are part of an experiment to see how long a blog can stay alive when nobody posts to it!
Back from Palm Springs California to a fresh carpet on top of the previous one.
If you look carefully on the first picture you can see a stream flowing through our place which only flows, I am told, for about one month per year.
In answer to a question from one of our religious zealots (Gill) yes the author of your plagiarized sermon is only about two miles from here.
Glad to hear Denmark has received a first blessing in white this week I hope you enjoy it. Whatever convinced the human race to inhabit these northern lattitudes will always be a mystery to me.
England I hear is just cold and grey and wet. We have not had any rain for months - I do remember a lot of rain last summer though - thunder storms every day.

Palm Springs

From the HOT desert

Palm Springs California is where I am and I just slipped on some ice outside! Temperatures are 20 degrees below normal.
I saw snow on Malibu Canyon road where we used to live - so at least Colorado is not the only place having a most exceptional winter.
Welcome to big william's peaceful blog.
It seems like war has broken out "little william's world"
Interesting that I get more comments from more people on the blog than I ever receive emails.
I think the reason is that when people send comments, they also arrive in my email inbox BUT I can't reply to them - unless I know who they are from and dig up the person's email address and send them one.
So it seems to be anonymity that motivates, or protects certain people.
Thank you to my two daughters in law - Elaine and Mette Kathrine for their comments. I did not even know that Elaine reads the blog. Put your feet up now for a few weeks whenever you can Elaine! Live off your husbands new, fat salary.
Congratulations Lead Engineer Ben - C Eng. what a "triumph"

Feeling Blue?

No just Frozen! The camera has a special setting for snow scenes - I must remember not to use it again!
This blog is suffering from frost damage.
We are going to Palm Springs California on Wednesday but temperatures there are 20F below average - namely 50F which won't be hot enough to thaw me out!
Some of you are asking for travel plans for the Amazon etc. After all the boasting about going to Morocco for Christmas and then not leaving Boulder I am not counting any chickens.
We are supposed to go to Malaysia at the end of Jan beginning Feb and then Argentina end of Feb - both business trips but then we are tagging on the Amazon cruise (Brazil) which is vacation.
All I have to report from Boulder is -18C and more snow!

Special Speaker Response

Reluctant, though I am, to use this blog as a message board there are certain people who only seem to communicate with me this way.
I am delighted to hear from Gill and Ben in any way I can so here is the truth about the speakers.
No Gill they are not the ones I bought at Ullenhall - I think Barry had those and swapped them for some B and W speakers which I swapped with Maurice Wiggins in the early 80's. I swapped them for the amplifier which Ben has.
I bought the speakers from Tandy because no others could handle the power of that amp.
So they are 26 years old.
I suspect you can fix the problem, Ben, simply by replacing the bass drivers - repair maybe an option but with the adjustable crossover in those cabinets you could probaby get a good sound from some similar drivers as long as they fit in the holes!
Shame on you for suspecting Tim's little fingers!
To the rest of my readers I apologise for this esoteric diversion.

Daily Bread!

I discovered gluten so I can make chewy bread with big bubbles or "open crumb" as we bakers call it!

Good crust like this is easy if you spray the bread and the inside of the oven frequently during the first few minutes of baking. This delays the formation of the crust and facilitates the migration of sugars to the surface. These sugars eventually form the crust

Raspberry, blackberry, pear and strawberry tarts, made with fresh fruit, for dessert.

Thanks for your comments keep them coming

Farenheit to Celsius!

This did not paste quite the way I wanted it to but I think you are smart enough to figure it out.
It was FOUR degrees F here this morning - MINUS 16 Celsius. Cold! I think you Europeans will agree.

Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Polio, Malaria

Went to the travel doctor for our shots for the Amazon trip yesterday and had two injections and some "live" pills for typhoid yesterday.
28,000 people died during the construction of the Panama Canal mostly from yellow fever.
We are going to Iguasu falls and you can't go there without proof you have had the yellow fever jab.
More snow tomorrow - I will wait till then for the fresh photo William wants.

Happy Birthday Mette Kathrine

Finally celebrated MY birthday up the mountain at the Flagstaff House last Friday under these fabulous Danish lamps.
For the uninitiated the gold one is an "Artichoke Lamp" and the other one is the one famous for being over Tina and Bent's (Mette Kathrine's parents in Soro) dining table.
The other view is the rising moon, which looked a lot better than the photo suggests.
Dinner was a Buffalo Wellington - strangely designed with the pate in the centre and the meat around it with brioche round the outside. Not nearly as juicy as the more traditional beef filet en-crout type wellington. Better than the namesake rubber boot though.
We had a Cabernet Sauvignon version of Amarone from Italy which was very nice. I did not know that the grapes are dried before they make Amarone from them. I am sure Bent knew though. This was a 2001 Inama Bradisimo Veneto Rosso and I highly recommend it.

Leftover leftovers

Bubble and Squeak with brussels sprouts and bacon bits.
Roast pork with sage and onion stuffing pie. Made more interesting when you don't have a mincer (or grinder as we call it here) Chopping the cold, roast meat with a knife produces a better texture than grinding. Unless you are using raw meat of course.
Sorry I forgot to photograph them before we devoured them.
We are snowbound again so what else to do but stay home and cook?

Spot the Difference!

OK I don't expect you to notice a foot of new snow which fell overnight BUT - the Colorado license plate I fought for yesterday after "VIN verification" (vehicle identification number) obtaining Colorado insurance, filling in a hundred forms and paying a whopping $330 I got them.
The other cars need emissions tests and all sorts of complicated procedures.

And Greasy Joan Doth Keel the Pot!

That is, as I recall, the last line.
I learned it and even sang it at school.
How about "good morrow gossip joan"?
Yes anonymous one you CAN choose the prize - though if you are who I think you are you have plenty of prizes!
There is a winner but they did not reveal their identity. I am thinking it may be one of "the twins" maybe the one who sent the valentine card? Or it could be Elaine but I don't think she would be playful with me about the prize!
William came in second with some Google information.
No pictures today - all we have is snow and icicles still.

Happy New Year from The Tropics

When icicles hang by the wall
and Dick the shepherd blows his nail.

A prize will be given to anyone who can name and write a bit more of that poem.

Spot the New Items!

Timothy's oil painting is the newest! the colors match the red cupboard it sits on.
The green vase came from Malta. The glass flowers from Prague a few years ago. If you look carefully you will see that one of the flowers has a prosthetic stalk.
In front of the flowers is the snazziest Christmas card of the year (three dimensional with the Danish heart-shaped Christmas tree thingy in the middle (Maureen puts it more simple "like a snow globe") - thanks to Tina and Bent for it.
Not a lot of comments lately but I am sure when people go back to work the blogging and commenting will resume it's normal busy rate.
I just finished John Le Care's "Absolute Friends" and would highly recommend it to any anti war readers (Iraq war that is)
Look at littlewilliamsworld.blogspot.com (link to the right (or is it left?)) for pics of Timothy (the artist) and all the rest of the European side of my family and ex-family.
